Introduction

The King Hamad Prize for Agricultural Development has been launched under the auspices of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim Al-Khalifa Wife of the King of Bahrain, President of the Consultative Council of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development, to create a positive competitive environment between owners of agricultural projects, Bahraini farmers as well as researchers to better improve this sector.

The agricultural sector is one of the most important sectors forming any global economy (agriculture, industry and services). It is the main sector to achieve sustainable development and economic balance.

Prize Categories and Value

King Hamad Prize for Agricultural Development is awarded to three categories:

Best Agricultural Project

Best Bahraini Farmer

Best Agricultural Research and Studies

First Category: Best Agricultural Project

A. Best Agricultural Production Project

The prize has been introduced for the Best Productive Agricultural Project that contributes to supporting the national economy and achieving food security. Products may include food crops or ornamental plants for use in landscaping and ecological projects. These projects will be recognized for their use of modern agricultural technology; following effective and smart marketing methods, committing to protecting the local environment, contributing to the transfer and consolidation of technology and raising the proportion of Bahraini labor in the agricultural sector.

B. Best Agriculture Support Project

This prize has been introduced for the Best Agriculture Support Project, this is in recognition of the active role they play in supporting and sustaining productive agricultural projects, thereby enhancing the agricultural sector’s contribution to the national economy, increasing the diversity of products and the number of workers in this sector and contributing to the attainment of relative self-sufficiency.

The Award Prize

The first place winner from both categories will each be granted a cash prize of BHD 10,000 (Ten Thousand Bahraini Dinars), commemorative plaque, and certificate of appreciation.

Second Category: Best Bahraini Farmer

Best Bahraini Farmer

An annual prize awarded to the best Bahraini farmer for his/her distinction and appreciation for their efforts and contribution in the development of the agricultural sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This prize aims to increase the number of professional Bahraini farmers of different age groups and encourage them to compete for better agricultural output. It also aims to raise the level of knowledge and technical skills to increase local production as well as economic return in the agricultural sector to achieve sustainability in agricultural production and contribute to achieving food security. Objectives of the prize have been extended to include the increasing awareness of farmers about the importance of preserving Bahraini agricultural traditions and to environmental issues. It also intends to encourage farmers to innovate and use modern farming techniques.

The Award Prize

The best two farmers, each will be awarded a cash prize of BHD 5,000, commemorative plaque, and certificate of appreciation.

Third Category: Best Agricultural Research and Studies

The Agricultural Research & Studies prize aims to support and motivate researchers to enhance their efforts towards raising the level of their scientific research in the area of agricultural development. It also aims to boost the agricultural sector to be a tributary of economic development, achieve food security and sustainability, and create a database of documented scientific research in the field of agriculture and related topics such as water, climate and the surrounding environment.

In view of the importance of encouraging researchers and motivating them to exert more efforts to raise the level and increase the variety of topics of research in agricultural fields, the scope of the prize was extended to include researchers from all around the world. This change was in recognition of the importance of research and the role played by researchers in the dissemination of their results, especially those that lead to better agriculture practices and solutions to challenges facing the sector. The prize also aims to encourage young people to research agricultural techniques and find alternatives that contribute to the increase in production while minimizing costs and managing resources efficiently.

Prize Privileges

The winner is awarded a cash prize and a commemorative plaque at a ceremony under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of the King of Bahrain, and the President of the Consultative Council of the National Initiative for Agricultural development. The winners may use the prize logo on promotional and marketing materials and their own publications. The winners have the right to apply again after one complete cycle of the award. The winners will be recognized through various mass media and the website of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development.
